Pro-Green AUB Faculty Recognized Among the World's Top 2% of Scholars in Their Field| 12/11/2020

A recent study produced a composite citation-based indicator which lists 32 current AUB faculty, and seven former ones, among the world’s top 2 percent of scholars in their respective fields. This includes 2 of Pro-Green’s AUB faculty, program director Dr. Nesreen Ghaddar and Dr. Kamel Abou Ghali. The study was conducted by a group of experts led by Professor John P.A. Ioannides at Stanford University, published in 2019 in the journal PLOS Biology, and updated in October 2020.

The publicly available database lists 100,000 top scientists, classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields. Using multiple citation-based indicators, the list provides standardized information on citations, h-index, coauthorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to peers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator. The study runs its composite indicator formula against the entire Scopus database from 1996 to 2019. The listing was updated in 2020 to include the top 2 percent of scholars worldwide, listing 159,683 authors.

The majority of AUB’s faculty who were listed among the world’s top scholars carried out most of their research while affiliated with AUB. Twenty-three faculty members on the list have been awarded tenure since AUB restored it in 2016, and most remain highly productive scientifically. This database testifies to AUB’s advantage in its research-intensive faculty, many of whom are award-winning educators and renowned physicians. This study recognizes the scholastic impact of AUB and its faculty, and demonstrates that AUB is a major international research university.

Waste crisis inspires youth, offers few jobs | 10/08/2018

Recognizing the issue, Dr. Nesreen Ghaddar, director of the Munib and Angela Masri Institute of Energy and Natural Resources at the American University of Beirut, has sought to target professionals already working in the field.

The Pro-Green online diploma, a relatively new program at AUB, is certified in collaboration with LAU and the American University in Cairo.

Professors at the three institutions teach virtual courses in green technologies – largely for professionals who need a boost in their field but lack the time or money to matriculate in a master’s program.

Technical Training Trips

Pro-Green and Energy Studies Students' Technical Training Trip to Jordan | 2/3/2019 - 6/3/2019

A group of 10 students from the Pro-Green program and AUB Energy Studies program under the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA), in addition to four AUB faculty and staff members, participated in a five-day technical training trip to Jordan, one of the countries in the Middle East with a large potential for generating power from renewable energy. The trip, which provided students the opportunity to view development and energy sites first hand, was co-organized by the Munib and Angela Masri Institute of Energy and Natural Resources, the Green Technologies Program, and the Energy Studies Program at AUB, along with the University of Jordan. It included site visits to Al Zaytoonah University and other renewable energy sites. This was the third Pro-Green technical training trip to take place. The first was to Sweden and Italy in February 2016, and the second to the UAE in 2018.

Below are testimonials from a student and two AUB faculty of the Pro-Green program:

“The Pro-Green technical trip provided me with insight into actual applications in the green industry.  I was introduced to some of the newest technologies by experts in the field.“ (Christelle Kheir, Pro-Green)

“An eye opening and mind enriching 5-day technical trip to Jordan, sponsored by the ProGreen Diploma in collaboration with AUB, LAU and AUC, was offered to a group of 10 students along with 3 faculty members. The trip which took place on the 2nd of March, included a visit to the Lab facility at Al-Zaytoonah University, introducing a wide range of renewable energy experiments. It also included visits to two solar farms, two wind farms and a PV panel manufacturer across different locations in Jordan. Such an event for sure has a positive impact on improving the working experience of the students by merging between the theoretical concepts and real life projects. We encourage the re-occurrence of such events in view of the added benefits it offers our students.” (Dr. Dima Fares El-Khalil, AUB faculty)

“The Pro-Green technical training trips have become a permanent feature of the student’s learning experience in energy related programs given the positive feedback from students and faculty. Last year’s trip to the UAE’s sustainable cities and this year’s trip targeted similar innovative projects in Jordan that offered the students a hands-on approach.” (Dr. Nesreen Ghaddar, AUB faculty and Director of Pro-Green)

Pro-Green and Energy Studies Students' Technical Training Trip to the UAE | 3/3/201/ - 7/3/2018

The Munib and Angela Masri Institute of Energy and Natural Resources at AUB organized the second technical training trip, this time to renewable sustainable cities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as to an international exhibition for the power industry in Dubai. Over five days, a group of 15 students from the Pro-Green online joint professional diploma program in green technologies and energy studies programs at the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) were able to examine sustainable development efforts in this part of the region, in the company of three faculty members from MSFEA and two Pro-Green program ambassadors.

Below are testimonials from the students:

“This was an inspirational, memorable trip that puts the diploma’s learning platform in the practical context while allowing for a bonding between great colleagues and a sharing of experiences through its well-organized sessions.” (Adiba Al Masri, Pro-Green)

“The technical training trip was a great educational and eye-opening experience for three main reasons: first, I got the chance to witness first-hand the operation of renewable energy plants that I only knew about in theory. Secondly, being able to travel to a nice area with a group of interesting people from different backgrounds is by itself a refreshing boost. Third, we got the chance to meet experts in the field and have interesting discussions with them.” (Ahmad Diab, Energy Studies)
