Pro-Green Program Director – Dr. Nesreen Ghaddar

Nesreen Ghaddar is Qatar Chair of Energy Studies, Director of the Munib and Angela Masri Institute of Energy and Natural Resources, and professor of mechanical engineering at the American University of Beirut. She joined the University in 1991 and subsequently served as Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department (2001-2007), coordinator of the Chemical Engineering program, and Acting Associate Provost (2008-09) before being appointed Associate Provost in 2009. Dr. Ghaddar’s first academic appointment was as an assistant professor at Kuwait University (1985-90). She obtained her BE (1980) from Kuwait University; Master’s (1982), and PhD (1985) in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Ghaddar is a founding member of the Energy Research Group (ERG), a multi-disciplinary grouping of scholars conducting basic and applied energy research for sustainability in Lebanon and the region. She served as ERG coordinator for four years, from 2000 to 2004. She also played an instrumental role in developing the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture’s Master’s program in Applied Energy in collaboration with European universities, as well as the new BS/BE in Chemical Engineering, which began in 2009-10.

Since 2005, Dr. Ghaddar has been an associate editor of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Journal of Applied Mechanics. She is a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Green Energy and the International Journal of Thermal Sciences. In 2003, she received the Outstanding Reviewer Award for the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer. Dr. Ghaddar was elected fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences in November 2007 and was the first woman elected to the Lebanese Academy of Science in November 2009.
